Dominic "Dom" Sapuppo Obituary

Dominic “Dom” Charles Sapuppo, age 89 of Chardon, passed away on September 2, 2022. Dom Sapuppo was born on April 3, 1933, in Wickliffe, OH, to the late Rose (nee Dimberio) and Anthony Sapuppo.

He attended Wickliffe High School, graduating in 1952. While there he was a member of the National Honor Society and a star athlete, lettering in 3 sports, while earning county-wide recognition. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy (1952-1956) during the Korean War, traversing the world as an ordinance specialist with his squadron, VP-23 (Seahawks), in a P2V Neptune. While stationed at Brunswick Naval Air station, Maine, he met his future wife, Madelyn (Rita) Healey at a USO dance. Because of this meeting, and by the grace of God, he took weekend leave and was not on board when his flight crew was lost on a training mission in the waters near Bermuda, having traded weekends with a fellow Seahawk. Dom mourned their deaths until his dying days.

After his service in the Navy, Dom and Rita married and settled in Kirtland, Ohio, where they raised four children, Anthony, Michelle Sapuppo Riordan, Kathryn Sapuppo Clancy and Carol Sapuppo Stephens (David).

Dominic took pride in his family and his work. He also loved sports and outdoor activities, especially fishing. He spent 25+ years working in sales for Western and Southern Financial Services, in Willoughby, where he made many friends. After retirement, to stay busy, he worked another 10 years for Laketran. He told family he enjoyed Laketran because it gave him a chance to help people, as he transported mostly the elderly and special education students, helping them on and off busses.

Great tragedy struck with the sudden loss of his grandson, Shawn Sapuppo (Amber) (1979-2014), and later, the death of Shawn’s father, his dear son, Anthony “Tony” Sapuppo (Jenifer) (1959-2020), leaving him with the kind of pain only a grieving grandparent and parent can understand.

He was also preceded in death by his mother and father, stepfather, Carmen DeCamillo, wife, Madelyn Healey Sapuppo Daniels and siblings, Caroline, Anna, Joseph, and stepsister, AnnaMarie.

His remaining family was his pride and joy. They loved him for his wisdom, strength of character, protective nature and quiet sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his three daughters, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A Funeral Mass in honor of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church 29850 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe. Private inurnment will be in Willoughby Village Cemetery.
