Obituary

Janet Clare Courtot (nee Hoffmann), age 81, passed away peacefully at her home in Wickliffe, Ohio, on June 18, 2026. A proud lifelong resident of Wickliffe, Janet briefly left the city while raising her children, returning in 1993 to the community she loved.

Janet was the devoted Mother of Dennis, Tina, and Debbie, and the loving Grandmother of Ricky, Martin, Kristen, and Kaylee. She was the cherished daughter of the late Clarence Henry and Zelma Mae (née Schlott). She is preceded in death by her parents, her newborn baby daughter, her brother Jim, and her beloved dogs Samantha and Maxine.

Janet’s life was defined by perseverance, generosity, and a tireless drive to better herself and provide for her family. After her children entered school, she began her professional journey at Sears Roebuck & Company as a Sales Associate, where she formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Janet continued to grow professionally. She earned her associate degree in phlebotomy from Lakeland Community College and later she earned a bachelor’s degree in business at 50 years old from Lake Erie College - a milestone that embodied her tenacity and strong belief in education. Janet showed that it is never too late to achieve a dream.

At Lake Erie College she worked in the Business office while pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

True to her nature, she often worked second jobs at Dillard’s and a medical‑records copying agency that served hospitals throughout the Cleveland area.

Each job a steppingstone to the next reflecting her resiliency and determination to keep learning and improving herself, always moving, always striving, and especially always doing what was needed for her family.

She led by example, demonstrating through her own dedication and accomplishments that education holds lasting value and that personal growth and learning remain vital at every stage of life.

After leaving her job at Lake Erie College, Janet joined AT&T, where she remained until her retirement.

Janet especially enjoyed traveling with her children and grandchildren, creating treasured memories on countless trips and adventures. Though she never learned to swim herself, she made sure her family did, instilling in them the importance of confidence and safety in the water, especially since they grew up near Lake Erie. She was a loyal Cleveland sports fan — cheering for the Indians turned Guardians, the Cavaliers, the Captains, and the Browns. Above all, Janet lived with a deep and humble faith that guided her throughout her life.

Her wit, humor, kindness, fierce independence, and unwavering love for family and friends touched many. She never knew a stranger and cherished every relationship she formed. One of her favorite sayings, lovingly remembered by her family, was: “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck” and referring to children and grandchildren as “Punkin.”

Janet gave generously for many years to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, reflecting her lifelong compassion for others.
