Walter J. “Poppy” Hintz, age 87, of Wickliffe, passed away on June 29, 2018 and was born on September 10, 1930 in Cleveland, OH. He was placed in the earth he loved in a private ceremony on July 3.
Walter taught biology and science for over 65 years with much of it at Wickliffe High School, Shaw High School, Ursuline College and Lakeland Community College, where he retired from teaching in 2017. He was a U.S. Army medic during the Korean Conflict and a lifelong Browns fan and season ticket holder.
Walter is survived by his wife Norma (nee Squire) of 67 years; Dearest father of Patricia (Rod) Jewell, David (Monica), and son-in-law, Denny (Linda) Vargo; Devoted grandfather of Justin (Sarah) Vargo, Mandi (Dave) Solema, Danny (Nikki) Horton, Alex Jewell, Alexandra Hintz and great grandfather Lilly Vargo, and Chase and Trevor Solema; Dear brother of Donald Hintz, Mary Jane (Roger) Gundy and “unofficial daughters” Mary Smaltz and Bobbie Senowitz; Dear uncle to many nieces and nephews, cousin and thousands of students who he was thrilled to take in as family.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Betty Vargo and grandson Michael Vargo.
An informal celebration of life will be held on Sunday July 15, 2018 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Caramel gymnasium 29850 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe 44092.
